Is Regionalization Right for You?
In an era of shrinking budgets and increased need for service improvements, productive partnerships between municipalities make sense. Who doesn’t want better service at a lower price? But a longstanding “home rule” tradition in the Commonwealth can make sharing control and accountability a deterrent to regionalization. Communities need local champions to counteract institutional resistance and promote collaboration.
Whether you are a mayor, a department head or an interested citizen, you can find helpful and relevant information here on everything from the basics—What is regionalization, anyhow?––to detailed information on the role you can play in regionalization to current best practices and examples of successful regionalization activities across the Commonwealth.
Regionalization is not: 1) an automatic loss of jobs; 2) a loss of control or management oversight; 3) a diminished response to the public; 4) another layer of governmental bureaucracy, or 5) a four-letter word!
